Students with various disabilities now have access to support services at Trinity River Campus.
Braille AccuPlacer testing, note-takers, interpreters, mobility devices and more are readily available to students who request them, according to Debbie Schall, coordinator of disability support services.
And the DSS office wants to add more services. Schall said she is looking into working with the Fort Worth Transit Authority, or The T, to offer expanded bus or van services for disabled students who need door-to-door transport.
For at least one TR student, requesting and receiving the help he needed was an easy, pleasant undertaking.
“It was a wonderful experience,” said 23-year-old Kenton Morgan. “The process was very smooth. You call them, you go in and they address the situation.”
Morgan, who has cerebral palsy, is studying broadcast communications.
Rhonda Longoria, who serves as Morgan’s personal attendant and attends classes with him in case he needs medical treatment, said she also was pleased with the office.
“He has also attended classes at South Campus and also SE Campus,” she said. “But here, they allow the student to take responsibility for accessing the services. It gives him a feeling of self-control and of guiding his own access.”
Other services offered for disabled students include tape recorders, front-row seating, printed materials in alternative formats, special chairs, tables and alternative testing.
