Today To support Women’s History Month, Julie & Julia will be shown 11:40 a.m.-1:40 p.m. in the SE Campus Bistro. Two different generations of women come together in this film to do something they love — cook. Going on 30, a woman decides to undertake a year’s adventure in culinary arts and cook 524 different recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook. Even though the women never come into contact in this film, it shows passion, fearlessness and confidence, which make anything possible. This film is rated PG-13 and will run for 123 minutes.
March 16 TR Campus will show the second film in a Women’s History Month series. The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo will be shown all day in the dining area of the Riverfront Café. Produced for PBS, the 2005 documentary, narrated by Rita Moreno, explores the life of the 20th century Mexican artist who became an international sensation of modern art and radical politics.
March 22 Janet Cassady, mechanical engineer, and Tracie Benson, American Airlines flight dispatcher, present Take Flight with Mathematics 2-3:20 p.m. in the SSTU Forum Room. The South Campus division of business and mathematics is sponsoring this event.
March 23 NE Campus student activities will sponsor Women of Color and HIV/AIDS 12:30-2 p.m. in NSTU Center Corner. Women’s studies graduate teaching assistant La Cisha Crear will discuss reasons women of color are more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS including political, social and economic issues. Lunch will be provided. March 24 TR Campus will show the final film in a series dedicated to Women’s History Month. Women, Leadership and Politics: A Rising Tide? The documentary by journalist Maria Hinojosa will be shown all day in the dining area of the Riverfront Café.
March 25 South Campus Women’s History Month Film Festival continues with Good Hair 2-4 p.m. in SACD 1402. In the 2009 documentary, comedian Chris Rock takes a fun look at African-American hairstyles. Rock visits with and interviews a variety of personalities including Al Sharpton, Maya Angelou, Kerry Washington, Salt-N-Pepa and Ice-T.
March 25 SE Campus will show the final movie in a film series dedicated to Women’s History Month. Iron Jawed Angels will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the ESEC Bistro. Two women come together in this movie to fight for women’s voting rights while they go up against powerful men in political society, even the president of the United States. March 25 SE Campus welcomes Chelsea Brown, political science professor at Southern Methodist University, who will present Beyond the Battlefield: Women and the Effects of War 2:30-3:30 p.m. in ESEE 1304. This speech will offer an insight on what life is like for women after soldiers go off to war and how the war affects women when the soldiers return home. The presentation is free.
