Students planning careers that are science intensive can become charter members of the NW Campus Futures in Science Club. The group’s organizers want to provide extra-curricular activities beneficial for students’ academic pursuit.
The FSC sponsors are Dr. Lynn Preston and Mark Rhodes. After, the group meetings, students can stay to watch an autopsy video.
The group is planning a field trip to visit Body Worlds: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science.
The controversial exhibit by Gunther von Hagen, a German anatomist, features approximately 200 authentic human specimens. It includes whole bodies, plastinated individual organs and transparent body slices preserved through plastination, a technique that replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics. The exact date for the trip will be set depends on the number of people attending, but the group has temporarily aimed for Saturday, March 24 or 31. The student group ticket price is $16. However, the group plans several fundraisers to reduce the price for members attending.
The first fundraiser included a $50 TCC bookstore gift card and a $25 American Express gift card giveaway, won by Dawn Flynn and Kira Whitworth, respectively. The group is also selling denim shirts and bags embroidered with the FSC logo.
Anyone who would like to attend can sign up by e-mailing futuresinscienceclub@gmail.com before the Friday, Feb. 2, deadline. Students from all campuses, friends and family are welcome to attend.
The group has also arranged for JoNell Mitchell, associate professor of nursing, to speak about the TCC nursing program and the nursing entrance exam.
The presentation will be Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. in WSTU 1303. Student activities will provide refreshments.
