South Campus’ chess club visited Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School in Fort Worth April 2 for community service.
Club president Jonathan Kigigha said the event was great.
“The chess club and Our Mother of Mercy organized something where students can play and have fun,” he said.
At the Catholic school, South Campus students competed in a chess tournament with the students.
“Three members of the chess club attended the tournament while one member was a regular South Campus student,” Kigigha said. “I was very proud of my vice president Breuna [Gallaread] because I’ve played her in chess matches and when I watched her in the tournament I analyzed how her skills increased.”
Gallaread said the tournament was amazing.
“I didn’t even know I was going to be in the tournament,” she said. “So it feels good to have won, but I had to refresh my skills.”
Gallaread said she played a little chess when she was younger, so when she was told she was to play, she was unsure.
“I was nervous because I thought I was going to lose, but I was happy I won third place,” she said.
Math professor Natalie Johnson said visiting Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School was a good community service outreach program.
“This was a good opportunity for private school students to meet college students who shared the same interest,” Johnson said. “The college students were able to give back by doing this tournament, and I feel like it established a good partnership between schools.”
Johnson said she was contacted the next day by the faculty saying the students of the private school were signing up for the chess club at their school.
