Students win NW speech competition

Speaking won some NW Campus students trophies.

In the fourth annual speech competition Nov. 23-24, students gave three- to six-minute informative or persuasive speeches, and three winners were chosen from each category.

Speech instructors Zack Frohlich and A’Isha Malone started the competition in 2006 for their students. They received positive feedback from faculty and students, so after three years, they opened the competition to all NW Campus students. During this year’s competition, public speaking students aided in judging the preliminary rounds.

All entrants and winners of the competition were NW Campus students. Students received trophies for first, second and third place in both categories and will compete in NE Campus’ Speak-a-Rama.

Twenty-four students entered the persuasive portion of the competition. First place went to Sara Hutchins for “The Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet.” Second place went to Ammie Nicholls, and the third-place winner was David Hair.

Out of 16 students entered in the informative category, Faith Pinto walked away with the first-place award for her speech about Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Britain.

Second place went to Shelby Cantu while Robert McCormick claimed third place.
