New Yorker hosts NE hip-hop class

A free master hip-hop class will be taught by choreographer Excel Garner 1-2:30 p.m. April 23 in the NHPE building.

This will be Garner’s second year teaching a master hip-hop class on NE Campus. The New York resident has danced behind artists such as Heavy D, Robin S and Ashanti. He appeared as a break dancer in the movie Brown Sugar and made multiple appearances on Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam for four years.

“I have attended every class he taught at this campus,” said dance professor Linda Quinn. “He is an excellent teacher.”

Quinn is confident students will learn a lot of current and exciting hip-hop choreography.

When Garner was here last fall, the hip-hop choreography he taught was used in the NE fall concert.

The class is free for all TCC students and sponsored by the Dance Club as a gift to students, Quinn said. Dancers of all levels are welcome.

Garner said he enjoyed his work with NE students, Quinn said.

“Excel has a great way of welcoming all dancers to hip-hop for the first time as well as experienced hip-hop dancers,” she said. “Experienced hip-hop dancers love his classes because he always challenges them.”
