NW golfing for war memorial

By Chris Cates/sports editor

Students and faculty who play golf can enjoy the sport while contributing to a good cause at the Annual Afghanistan/Iraq War Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament, hosted by NW Cornerstone honors program students, raises money for the memorial they created to honor fallen heroes of these wars.

About the Tournament

The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Lost Creek Golf Club in Aledo.

Participants may register individually or with a team of four players and must arrive one hour before the tournament to check in.

The cost is $80 for each player and includes a round of golf, cart, range ball, meal and prizes.

The deadline for registration and entry fee payment is 1 p.m. Friday, April 6. Raffle tickets, mulligans and “Poker on the Green” will be sold at registration.

The raffle prize is a 20-inch Phillips LCD television. Complementary Budweiser will be provided for tournament players of age.

About the Memorial

Dr. Laura Wood, professor of history and government, and Dr. Michael Nichols, associated professor of history, originally proposed the memorial project.

Dedicated on Veterans Day 2004, the Memorial Wall was designed, financed and built by Cornerstone students as a tribute to those who have given their lives.

The framework is covered by a tin roof to protect it from the elements and is coated with powder to ward off rusting. The deceased military personnel’s names are imprinted on dog tags and permanently attached to the wall.

As of fall 2006, approximately 2000 individuals have been honored.

Since the numbers of names the students have added exceeds the current space, the group needs money to expand the framework. Additionally, funds are needed for upkeep and maintenance.

For more information, golfers can contact Wood at 817-515-7280.
