    Inexperienced students can receive advice

    By Willie Robinson/reporter

Young adults who are fresh out of high school and clueless on where to go in life or who are hitting the “not enough experience” wall on job interviews were told help is just a workshop away Feb. 25.

“We’re not selling a service, but helping youth achieve their dreams,”said Cynthia George, outreach specialist for Workforce Solutions of Tarrant County, in a South Campus presentation.

A problem, however, is that many who could benefit are not aware of these services, she said.

Workforce Solutions provides many services for people 17 to 21 in need of educational, employment or job experience assistance. Educational opportunities include programs on vocational training, college preparation and aid on obtaining a high school diploma or GED.

Employment-related services provide workshops on interviewing, résumé writing and job-retention skills. Another service for the undecided, career explorations, offers field trips to in-demand occupation sites in Tarrant County.

Leadership development services, such as mentorships, budgeting and life skill workshops are also provided.

Such services are aimed not only at “serious youth who are interested in developing their future,” George said, but also at those who may be uninspired and undecided.

“It’s a program that works because I’ve seen it work,” she said, describing participants whose expectations had been limited to fast food or warehouse positions.

Workforce Solutions services are free, requiring only that participants dress for success and maintain both a professional demeanor and a high level of participation.

Young adults interested in these services can obtain more information at www.workforcesolutions.net.
