Three NE music students received scholarships from the Sonata Club Nov. 16.
After performing at a recital, Christopher Lyman and Edens Kebreau were each presented $800 in scholarship money. Linsley Liburd, the other recipient, was competing in a two-year college all-state competition.
The Sonata Club, a group of local music lovers, grants three scholarships each year to students to encourage their dedication to music. This year, all three went to TCC students.
Lyman, 21, performed twice during the recital, playing both the trumpet and percussion.
“I’ve been playing the trumpet for about 10 years now, and I just picked up percussion last semester,” he said.
Currently in his seventh semester at TCC, Lyman plans to transfer to the University of North Texas to earn a degree in music and performance to help him become a band director.

Kebreau began playing the viola in seventh grade for three or four years and then picked it back up after a 23-year break when he started taking classes again at TCC three semesters ago. He hopes to transfer to either the University of Texas at Arlington or UNT to get his master’s degree.
“I know this sounds a bit cliché,” he said. “But after I get my master’s, I want to come back and teach here at the community college.”
Kebreau currently works as a music director at a church, which is just one more step toward his goal.
Liburd, 19, has been singing since 2006. He was unaware that he had won a scholarship until the day they were awarded. He wants to attend UTA or UNT to further his music education degree.
