The Hives Black and White Album (4 stars)
The retro-rocking Swedes are back. The Hives have dance-hall frenzied fun with the their newest album, The Black and White Album.
The CD grabs musical bits and pieces from past decades and meshes them together to give a refreshing sound to their punk-garage rock.
Though the listener might not know what the front man, Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, is shrieking about, the manic guitar riffs and drums are ear-pleasing and slightly comical.
The flaw with this album, though, is it seems like a grab bag of The Hives tracks, without collective organization within the CD or song-wise.
The Black and White Album might be all over the place, but it sure is a lot of fun.
