Disclaimer: This movie is not a remake — it is a new installment in the Evil Dead franchise.
In the new Evil Dead, directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Sam Raimi, the same events occur as in the 1981 version of Evil Dead.
Five friends venture to a cabin, where the discovery of the Book of the Dead leads them unknowingly to release a demon living in the woods. Slowly, the demon possesses the friends as they do over-the-top, outlandish things to themselves and others.
Taking elements from the original movie, 2013’s Evil Dead follows the tradition of being majorly gory: from the bloody vomit falling out of one character’s mouth to another cutting her arm off with an electric knife.
The thing that works well for this film is the director knowing how to use prosthetics. The movie has little if any CGI to capture the brutality of the film such as the cuts and bruises and the transformation from human to demon.
This approach hasn’t been done before, so that’s a plus.
However, the movie has flaws that all stem from the acting.
Some of these actors such as the lead character David (Shiloh Fernandez) can’t convince the audience of certain danger, Instead of actually leading the action, David would just stand there. Most people would probably prefer to take direction from the possessed girl and run into the woods to meet their impending doom.
However, the movie has a way of being scary and humorous at the same time. Although this film may not be preferred by general moviegoers, it is a must-see for fans of the original Evil Dead or the avid horror movie watcher. They will not be disappointed.
Final take: This is a good horror film that hasn’t been done in a while.
Those who would enjoy it: Those who enjoy gore and violence on a horror-fanatic level.
