Recently, a Kennedale Independent School District student wore a shirt with the image of Obama on the front.
The school called his mother and told her that he needed to change shirts because wearing a shirt with President Obama on the front is a controversial issue.
Since when did the topic of our country’s president become controversial?
It would be understandable if the election were still going on between President Obama and John McCain. Maybe then it would be controversial. But since he has been president for more than one year now, that is not up for discussion.
Not sure why the topic was controversial, the mother did question the school’s decision about the T-shirt when the son told her that they were allowed to wear shirts with former President George W. Bush’s picture and logos.
This school district just involved politics in a way that should not be taught to students.
Uniforms in schools are acceptable, and parents comply with the rules as well as students with dress codes that do not allow short skirts, baggy pants and non-transparent backpacks.
Students always find a way to show their creative expressions through their clothing. But is wearing a shirt showing our country’s president a violation of this freedom of expression as long as they stay within the dress-code guidelines?
We do not want to send our children the message that it is fine to support one president but not another.
