NE Campus to give tips on college life in Sept. 2 orientation

By Mario Montalvo and Marley Malenfant

First-time students have the opportunity to learn more about the upcoming year during NE Orientation to College: Achieving the Dream One Student at a Time 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Student Center NSTU 1615A.

The event, hosted by student services, is intended to inform new and existing students of the services available to help them get the most out of their college experience.

The event will include introductions by NE Campus president Larry Darlage and student development services vice president Magdalena de la Teja and keynote speakers Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley and State Rep. Marc Veasey.

Students can attend any or all of the events. For example, students can attend Hadley’s 9 a.m. You Are in the Driver’s Seat session and any of the four breakout sessions at 9:45 or 10:45 a.m. or 12:45 or 1:45 p.m.

At an 11:30 a.m. lunch, Veasey will present Achieving the Dream of a College Education in Texas.

Speakers will cover a wide range of topics such as navigating CampusCruiser and WebAdvisor, managing money habits, finding learning styles and learning to love the library.

Other topics include classroom etiquette, issues for veterans, general tips for college success and advice on distance learning and weekend classes.

Several of the sessions are offered more than once, so students have more options.

NE administrative assistant Kari Corbin said the idea of the orientation is to make new students and longtime students prepare for the semester.

“Larry Darlage will welcome the new students and kind of give them an idea of what to expect,” she said.

Clubs and campus services will have tables setup throughout the Student Center where representatives will answer questions and offer information.

The day will end with a wrap-up session and door prizes at 2 p.m.

The event is open to all students.

Registration for the free event begins at 8 a.m. in the TV lounge in the southeast corner of the Student Center near the bookstore.

Breakfast and lunch will be served, and prizes will be awarded throughout the day.
