Each campus offers help to students in writing

The writing centers located on all TCC campuses help students who need assistance in the subjects of writing and reading.

Whether students are looking for help improving their writing skills or a quiet, peaceful place away from the library to study or do homework, the writing center can provide aid.

“Students can come to the writing center whether they need help with essays, reading and even job applications,” said South Campus work-study employee Patricia Benjamin. “All TCC writing centers at every campus welcome walk-ins but prefer students make appointments to get help for sure.”

Students with online classes who need access to a computer as well as ESL students can use the center, Benjamin said.

“Our writing center has several tutors here all day long that students may get help from or ask questions to,” she said. “It is really easy for students to make appointments with our tutors. Students can either call, sign up in the writing center or make an appointment online.”

NE Campus’ writing center is not open to students on weekends.

“We do have free tutors Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-8:45 p.m.,” said Virginia Taff, a work-study employee in the NE center.

Taff said students are allowed to print 10 free pages a day, like some campus libraries, except the writing center will allow only 10 pages.

Many students are not aware of the writing centers or their locations. On TR, it is located in the TREF building, work-study employee Trevyn Lewis said.

“We usually have at least 40 students a day who come to the writing center and get help from our tutors, so appointments are probably the best,” Lewis said.

Not only does the writing center help students with anything dealing with writing, but also with PowerPoints, speeches, source citations, testing help and much more, Lewis said.

Each campus has a different number of tutors available throughout the day.

“Sometimes, students can walk in, and we can automatically help them, but we cannot stress enough how much better it will be if students just make an appointment,” Lewis said.
