The NE English department invites students to attend the Poetry Jam for fun, refreshments and popcorn as well as poetry. The event takes place 12:30-1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A).

Students are asked to read 36 lines or less of original poetry, spoken word, rap or song for a chance to win $100 cash. A panel of random students and faculty will choose the winner.

“It’s always one of the most fun activities for us as a department because we’re able to see the hip talent we have here on the NE Campus,” said English instructor Shewanda Riley, organizer of the event.

Previously, the Poetry Jam has attracted 100-150 students with 30-40 readers, she said.

“I think it’s gone well in the past, and I think it’s a great outlet for the students here on campus, especially for the students that are creative and may not be in the creative writing class,” Riley said. “It’s a way for them to kind of express themselves.”

Riley hopes to have a student master of ceremonies to guide the poetry conversation, she said.

“Poetry is one of those art forms that people are a little scared of,” she said. “But, then when they get out there, they realize how much fun it is, and they read their stuff.”

Complimentary refreshments and a popcorn bar consisting of different kinds of popcorn will be available.

Students wishing to participate can sign up in the writing center or email Riley at shewanda.riley@tccd.edu. Sign-up will also be available the day of the show.
