She explained the steps from start to finish on how to receive a job and look good.
Job seekers should learn about the industry, the employer and themselves because it is important to be prepared for the interview, Carrasco-Miranda said.
A business uniform is what most people will wear, and she said this will communicate that one is a mature, stable professional.
Although a person wants to wear a business uniform, sometimes it may not always be good, she said. If hired, it is best to research the employer to figure out the type of environment and work that will be done, Carrasco-Miranda said.
“There is a lot of tips into earning a job such as making sure your hair is groomed and nails are clean,” she said. “Also, be sure that your clothes are clean and ironed.”
The uniform will need to be put on to make sure everything fits days before the interview. Men and women both need to be ready before the day of the interview, Carrasco-Miranda said.
The main colors for interviews are navy, black and brown, she said.
“I hate to wear navy, black or brown because everyone always wears those colors,” TR student Felicia Williams said.
For the best outcome, men should wear a two-piece suit with solid, conservative colors and a white, neatly pressed shirt with a white T-shirt underneath, Carrasco-Miranda said.
The belt needs to match the shoes, and socks need to be dark and high enough so that the skin is not showing. Men should also wear a tie with a simple pattern and a solid color, Carrasco-Miranda said.
Women need to wear a suit with a knee-length skirt and a neatly pressed tailored blouse. Also, stockings need to be worn at all times when legs are shown, she said.
A pantsuit is acceptable but is less conservative than a skirt suit, Carrasco-Miranda said.
Women should watch how much makeup they wear because too much can be a distraction and possibly cause the face to break out, Carrasco-Miranda said.
“Men and women need to avoid a strong scent of perfume or cologne,” Miranda said. “Tattoos always need to be covered up in the best way, which goes for both men and women.”
Much of the clothing needed for an interview can be expensive, but stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Kohl’s offer items for a lesser value, Carrasco-Miranda said.
“Although I get tired of wearing navy, black or brown, I now know that those are the most acceptable colors for a job interview,” Williams said. “I also no longer have to worry about clothes costing too much because I know where I can find everything I need.”
