Few schools endorse gambling, but a sport with growing popularity for charity is another matter.
At 6 p.m. Nov. 21, the TR forensics team will host a poker tournament in the Action suites, which will be combined into one room on the fourth floor of TR Campus, to raise money to send the team to tournaments this spring. The tournament is a $10 buy-in, and first to third places will receive trophies. Fourth to 10th places will receive medals.
The forensics team is young but is already well-decorated. Recent accolades include several first-place finishes at the NE Campus Novice Invitational, competing at a national forensics convention at Harvard University, and a 5-2 record at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association, which includes four-year schools in Texas.
The team plans on attending the regional championship for two-year schools at Tyler Community College in March and, if students place, the national championship in Schaumburg, Ill., in May.
Advisor Phillip Morgan said there’s room for the poker games to expand in the future if there is a positive response.
“We would much rather be doing this on a monthly basis,” Morgan said. “What could be cooler than challenging your math teacher?”
