Learning Skills Week psychs students up for coming semester

SE Learning Skills Week Sept. 9-12 on SE Campus will allow returning and transfer students to strengthen their academic skills through various seminars.

All seminars will take place in the North Ballroom between 8:30 a.m. and 8:20 p.m.

The week’s worth of events is a way student activities and advising and counseling can give students the tools they need and teach them how to use their resources through college, SE student development coordinator Frankie Ward said.

“For the new students, they might not know their major or what types of financial aid is available for each student,” she said.

Seminars will cover such topics as GPA, financial aid, study strategies and instructor’s expectations.

TCC faculty and staff will conduct many of the seminars and are available to answer questions students may have about TCC and their college careers.

Many students think of the library and think books, but the SE library holds several classes throughout the year, library services director Jo Klemm said.

“We try and help students make the best use out of the items they carry every day like phones and tablets,” Klemm said about a scheduled apps seminar. “They might not know about the apps available to help them study better, and that’s what we’re going to teach them.”

TCC has many organizations that students can join to be a part of something, but at the same time students may not know about time management and may need tips on how to be better organized.

These are topics that will be covered in the workshops, Ward said.

“Students could attend the My Connections to TCC, where they can learn their way around WebAdvisor and the types of information on there that they will use while at TCC,” counseling and advising assistant director Renetta Wright said.
