Students learn studying skills during NE counselor’s session

Anita Peters told students they could succeed as she presented How to Survive and Thrive Your First Semester in College as part of NE Campus’ Student Success Orientation Sept. 3.

“You have the privilege, intelligence and resources to be successful in college,” the NE counselor told students during her presentation.

Students who are overloaded and unaware of the hours needed to study have the biggest problems in the beginning, said Peters, a former teacher and private practice counselor for more than 15 years.

“Most students think, ‘Oh, I’ll only be in class a couple of hours a week,’ but never factor in studying,” she said.

Speaking to a crowd that ranged from the fresh out of high school to the seasoned classroom veteran, Peters gave what she called “common sense tips” on how to navigate the first semester.

Her suggestions included knowing where and how to study, getting oriented with the campus, staying organized and keeping in touch with an advisor.

Harold Kiggundu, a NE surgical technology major and TCC student since 2008, said he was ready to apply what he had heard.

“This presentation helped with planning to study and how to divide my time,” he said. “It confirms that planning is essential.”

Kiggundu said it is important that incoming freshmen attend such seminars.

“I just didn’t know what I wanted to do,” he said. “But with proper guidance, we learn what we want to become.”

Peters encouraged students by advising them to “stick with it.”

“Never give up,” she said. “We are here to partner with you. You are all individually important.”
