SE students put face on hunger

A group of SE Campus students will do its part to fight hunger in Tarrant County Oct. 9-10.

2010 marks the eighth year SE Campus will compete in the Canstruction competition.

As this year’s theme, students will build a face out of Campbell’s soup cans at the North East Mall. The title of the project is “The Face of Hunger.”

SE Campus is the only college team in the competition contending against professionals from construction and architectural firms.

SE program coordinator Arnie Radman said he hopes building a face out of cans will get people’s attention about the hunger issues in Tarrant County during a rough economic time.

“We want people to be aware, especially in these times, that it’s really tough for a lot of people,” he said. “Food banks are overstressed, and people need to support food banks.”

Radman said that most of his students tend to get involved in community service outside of school after competing in Canstruction.

“Students say, ‘OK, I need to continue to be involved in the community in some way or some form,’” he said. “It becomes a lifelong involvement.”

Campbell’s is assisting in the project for the fourth year by donating the cans for students to use. Radman said last year 8,000 cans were donated throughout Dallas and Fort Worth. He said this year, the company plans to donate 3,000 cans.

“Campbell’s has been very generous in giving us what we need,” he said. “This year, we’re using cans of Chunky Chicken. Food banks like that style of can. We’re also using Campbell’s chicken soup. We kept it kind of simple this year.”
