Hospitality students welcoming homeless

SE Campus will host the Arlington Life Shelter dinner 6-9 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Ballroom.

Residents of the Arlington Life Shelter attend the dinner annually. The SE Campus culinary hospitality student organization and the student dietetics organization work together to collect donations for the food and money from local grocery stores.

The culinary organization will serve the food to residents of the shelter.

SE Campus student development associate Amy Staley said the dinner will have a Christmas theme, and volunteers plan to dress up as holiday favorites.

Staley also said that volunteers have planed entertainment for the children.

“They’ll also dress up as elves who play with the kids who come,” she said.

“An addition to that, we will have a Santa Claus, a Ms. Claus, a Frosty the Snowman and a head elf. Ms. Claus reads to the kids and at some point, Santa comes out and gathers all the kids, and they give out toys.”

Staley said music is provided by the SE Campus music department.

“[Associate professor of music] Greg Dewhirst and the jazz band will have an ensemble performance the night of the dinner,” she said.

Donations are being accepted until the life shelter dinner. Toys and canned food can be left in the donation boxes by the Christmas trees around the campus or in the student activities office.

Students, faculty and staff can volunteer.
