NW Campus will host a free workshop Nov. 20 for all TCC students showcasing the Ballet Folklorico style of dance.
The trial Ballet Folklorico class will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio (WHPE 1103).
The workshop is an introduction to a new spring semester course, said dance associate professor Amy Sleigh.
The course will cover history, culture, language and music of dances from various regions of Mexico.
Sleigh said the Ballet Folklorico is a lively dance form accessible to all ages and levels of dancers.
“I anticipate we will have students that learned it from the time they were little, perhaps left it for a few years and are inspired to come back,” she said.
“I also anticipate students who are wanting to try a new form of art as well as an alternative physical fitness opportunity that will lead them into class.”
Students are encouraged to bring shoes that are comfortable and supportive.
Much of the footwork involved in Ballet Folklorico includes stamping and stomping.
Sleigh said students should also wear non-restrictive clothing to allow the body to move freely.
Instructor Raul Hernandez has taught Folklorico for more than 20 years, including four years in Mexico.
Hernandez was a member of Ballet Folklorico Hispano de Dallas from 1985-1991.
In 1991, he founded and is the current artistic director and choreographer for Grupo Folklorico Lindo in Dallas.
