SE constructs 3-story science facility

SE Campus will soon boast a new three-story science building with construction expected to be complete by October 2010.The first floor will have four geology labs, three speech rooms, a bistro area and a small kitchen. The second floor will have 10 computer science labs and a computer science center. The third floor will have four biology labs, three chemistry labs, and a science learning center.

The new science building is going to bring some much-needed space to an already crowded campus, officials said.

Students have not been able to park in the back of SE Campus since construction began in April. With the latest batch of new students registering for the fall semester, administrators expect even more congestion.

“Our new building will provide students an opportunity to advance,” SE President Judith Carrier said. “Every year, we’re getting more students enrolling, and we run out of space. Especially with the dual credit students, classes tend to fill up quickly.

“We are going to add cement parking toward the west wing by this month.”

Turner Construction Company is the project‘s general contractor.

“It is always a pleasure to work on a project for Tarrant County district,” senior project manager Robert Gaston said. 

“Our satisfaction comes from the completion of the project, and this one is no different.”

Pharmacy major Adam Mwakikoti said the building is definitely a necessity since he spends lots of time in the lab.

“It’s like you’re playing make-believe chemist when you don’t have the right equipment or space,” he said. “With the new building, students can actually learn now instead of rushing through a required class. So yeah, the building will serve a good purpose.”
