South Campus’ fine arts department will wish happy birthday to one of the most popular composers of the Romantic era with a concert.
Musicians will honor the life of German composer, pianist, organist and conductor Felix Mendelssohn at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Recital Hall.
The free concert will celebrate Mendelssohn’s 200th birthday and feature his chamber music for piano and strings. Violist Sorin Guttman, cellist Hsin-yi Wang and pianist Jessica Koebbe will perform.
Performance pieces include Mendelssohn’s Sonata No. 2 in D Major for piano and cello and Piano Trio in d minor, considered one of his greatest compositions.
Adagio for violin and piano, a piece by Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny, will also be performed.
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra member Guttman has performed with symphony orchestras in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida. He has also performed internationally in Switzerland and France.
Wang, South Campus music instructor, also teaches at the Virtuoso Music Studio and performs frequently with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra, Plano Symphony Orchestra. She appears in the Spectrum Chamber Recital Series.
“Mendelssohn is a rare composer,” she said. “He is one of the few that was not born into poverty.”
Koebbe currently teaches piano at Texas Wesleyan University and in the music preparatory department at Texas Christian University.
This concert will be a preview for a second performance Nov. 3 at Texas Wesleyan.
