NW Campus dance students will demonstrate what they learned this semester.
Amy Sleigh, associate professor of dance, will direct a Choreographers Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in the NW dance studio (WHPE 1103). The showcase will highlight the students of the composition and choreography courses.
Sleigh said the course teaches students solo, duet, group, prop and dance work. The students also learn how to be self-producers by incorporating costumes, music and a written artistic vision as well as a biography that can later be used on a resume.
Student choreographer Melissa Leyba has choreographed a Latin piece. Her dancers Pamela Reyes, Christian Espinal, Stephanie Diaz, Andrew Gern, Sara Butler and James Fauatea will perform to Latin Express by Craig Riley.
Linia Bernardy, another student choreographer, said she will perform a modern piece to tribal music with lots of drumming. She said she will also dance in other performances with all different genres of music from gospel to classical. She said she is most excited about her duet performance with student Ryan Cook.
“It’s really fast, and I get to do a lot of partnering with Ryan Cook, who is the only guy in our class,” she said. “I haven’t ever been able to perform partnering, so I’m really excited.”
Dance faculty will choose one of the performances to represent the campus dance program at the American College Dance Festival held in April at Northwestern State University in Louisiana.
The Dec. 3 performance will end with a collaboration between art students and dancers called Movement Accent, an improvisational work that involves dancing and painting.
