Now-Oct. 31 South Campus is offering early academic advising for the month of October. Academic advisors are available 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Advisors are also available limited hours Tuesday-Thursday in SLIB, SSTU, SSCI and STEC. Priority registration begins Nov. 15 for spring semester. For more information, call 817-515-4238.

Oct. 23 Financial Literacy: Credit Basics will be offered 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in NBSS 1103 on NE Campus. The session will explain the cost of borrowing and tips for good credit maintenance.

Oct. 23 SE health services and Carter BloodCare will hold a blood drive 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the North Ballroom. Those interested in donating must be at least 17 years old, 110 pounds, have a valid photo ID and not have donated within 56 days. Donors are recommended to be well-hydrated and have eaten recently before donating. The Bone Marrow Registry will also register individuals. The free event is open to the public.

Oct. 23 NE history instructor Andrew Hollinger will present Student Success Seminar: What is College All About? 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus. Hollinger will discuss people’s expectations of college as well as the role college plays later in life.

Oct. 23 The SE reading and writing resource center will have a research writing workshop 7:30-8 p.m. in the center (ESEE 2227A).

Oct. 23 SE student activities will show Temple Grandin for the Diversity Awareness Month movie screening 1-2 p.m. in ESEE 1328. The movie chronicles a young woman’s perseverance and determination while struggling with autism. The screening is free, and refreshments will be served.

Oct. 24 Health Insurance Marketplace will be noon-3 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room on South Campus. The workshop will offer information on health care and help students find insurance coverage. Oct. 24, 31 The Women’s Center of Tarrant County along with South Campus’ Family Empowerment Center is hosting Jobs NOW, a free job search clinic to assist students exploring employment options. Oct. 25 Trick or Treat Down Main Street will be held on TR Campus 5:30-7:30 p.m. TR employees and student clubs will hand out candy to children for Halloween in a safe environment. Oct. 28 Experience the earth through the scientific eyes of Charles Darwin on NW Campus during the S3 (Science Seminar Series) presentation Visit the Galapagos Islands Through Pictures. Oct. 29 Multitasking drivers are encouraged to “Take the pledge” 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the WTLO Walsh Library on NW Campus. An AT&T representative will direct a simulation during the latest installment of the Focus on Health series from NW health services. The Dangers of Texting and Driving will let participants drive a simulated vehicle and test reactions when text messages are received. Freebies and refreshments will be available, and no registration is required.

Oct. 29, 31, Nov. 2 Students thinking about going into accounting can attend any or all of the three workshops designed to help students in Pathway to CPA: Planning a Career in the Accounting Profession. Each day an experienced individual from a different corporation will lead discussions that answer questions concerning the job market, CPA testing requirements and planning for the future. Session times are 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29, 9:30 a.m. Oct. 31 and 10 a.m. Nov. 2. All sessions will be held in WACB 1123. Refreshments will be available.

Oct. 29-Nov. 7 The American Cancer Society and health services are enrolling participants for a 20-year cancer prevention study. Recruitment will take place 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 in the North Ballroom on SE Campus, Oct. 30 in WSTU on NW Campus, Oct. 31 in NSTU 1506 on NE Campus, Nov. 5 in the SSTU Living Room on South Campus and Nov. 7 in the TREF health services office on TR Campus. The study will determine how genetics, lifestyle and environment work together to cause or prevent cancer. Participants must be 30-65, have never had cancer, be willing to give a small blood sample, be measured and commit to completing periodic surveys over a 20-year period. Reservations are required, and those interested in participating should schedule an appointment and take an online survey at cancerstudyTX.org. Oct. 30-31 The B.E.A.R.S. (Bodybuilding Endurance Athleticism Recovery Speed) club on NW Campus will host a weightlifting event in costumes 2-6 p.m. Oct. 30 and 12:30-6 p.m. Oct. 31. The group will recruit new members, so students are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing to the NW Fitness Center and be willing to compete in the challenge. Female contestants and those under 18 will be placed in a 500-pound lifting competition, and males will be placed in a 1,000-pound contest.

Oct. 31 SE student activities will host its annual Fall Fest 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the North Ballroom and on the front lawn. Student clubs and volunteers will run food and game booths, and the Dynamic Drumline will perform. The free family-friendly event is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to wear costumes. Nov. 5 South health services along with the American Cancer Society will conduct Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3) 11 a.m.–3 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room. Men and women ages 30 through 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are invited to participate in this cancer prevention study. Nov. 8 Round one of the Jim Bolen Math Competition will take place simultaneously on all five campuses at 1:30-3 p.m. in NTAB 2223 on NE Campus, WTLO 2114 on NW, ESEE 1112 on SE, TRTR 3814 on TR and SNUR 1101 on South. The competition is open to all TCC students. Registration is not required but recommended so competitors receive email alerts.
