Counselor offers tips to manage time

Organizing time to best accomplish their chores is difficult for many students. But South Campus students learned last week that anyone can improve time management skills by prioritizing activities.

South Campus counselor Susie Carranza presented Time Management Feb. 12 to an audience of 19 students.

“Everyone has 24 hours in a day,” she said. “How you go about spending those hours can determine how you are in organization.”

Carranza, who has been with TCC for 12 years and on South since June 2007, illustrated how much time an average student both full-time and part-time should spend on certain activities through an entire week.

“There are 168 hours in a week total, and then we begin to distribute hours to activities that are most important to us,” she said, “Whatever time you have left over is the time that you use to do chores.”

Joella Lundell, a South Campus student, said she thought the information would be beneficial.

“I definitely found it very helpful,” she said. “It was just a confirmation of things I need to improve on.”

In addition to the resources Carranza presented in her speech, she also gave each student a calendar, which she said is a valuable asset to organization.

“I encourage you to use these calendars,” she said. “They will help you in your quest to be more organized.”

Carranza said organization is key to managing time and determining how to spend it.

“Plan out your day, your week or even your month. Have your activities mapped out and plan ahead,” she said. “It will help; I promise you.”
