Teacher to ease stress of speaking in public

As the old saying goes, “The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak.” For many students, especially those dreading the required speech class credit, that quote hits a little too close to heart.

College is hard enough without stressing out over next week’s big speech, so the NW Campus Student Success Days Committee has put together a seminar, Communication Apprehension, to help ease the overly anxious student’s troubles.

The seminar will cover how to prepare for a speech ahead of time as well as how to compose oneself while under the spotlight. Dr. Bobbi Stringer, NW Campus speech professor, will speak first about what to keep in mind while giving a speech.

Carol Hunsberger, NW Campus instructor of speech, will conclude the presentation by addressing how to properly organize a speech.

“We are covering tips for helping you to learn how to control the butterflies you feel in your stomach when you hear the word speech,” Stringer said. “Almost all students enter speech class with fear and trembling; hopefully, this seminar will help.”

The seminar is Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. in WSTU 1305. The session is free and open to anyone.
