South exhibit welcomes entries

This spring South Campus will drive students to think with the right side of their brains, shutting out logic and reason, as they prepare for The Opening IV: 2008 Juried South Campus Student Art Exhibit.

The annual two-week South Campus art exhibit gives students an opportunity to reveal their artistic side to peers.

Entry for the art exhibit is free but limited to TCC students enrolled in at least one South Campus course. Submitted artwork should not be older than a year.

Students may enter up to 10 pieces of artwork, one in each of the show’s 10 categories (see below).

Entries for this event should be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 16, to Kara English, associate
professor of visual art, or Paul Benero, associate professor of visual art, in the South Campus Art Building.

Janie Cavender, a local artist and longtime high school honors teacher, will judge the works. She may be joined by other honors teachers. The top pieces from that jury selection will be placed in the Carillon Gallery in the Joe B. Rushing Center for the Performing Arts.

The remaining pieces will be placed on display in the Art Building.

An opening ceremony Thursday, April 17, will begin at 6 p. m. in Carillon Gallery.

A jury will judge those pieces with the winning artist receiving a scholarship. The ceremony will then move to the Art Building, where the other pieces will be juried and have the opportunity to win prizes.

English, the show’s coordinator, said this event gives students a feel for the art community.

“[It] gets yourself into the process of wanting to show your art,” she said.

A silent auction will be held in the Art Building with all proceeds going toward the scholarship award for next year’s award ceremony. Bidding for the artwork will begin under $20.

Artwork donated for the silent auction should be submitted no later than noon, Friday, April 11.

English said everyone is encouraged to attend Thursday’s public viewing and auction, which will last until 8:30 p.m. Anyone unable to attend the Thursday event will have the opportunity to view the work until May 1.

“It’s fun, no matter where you are,” English said, “to see what fellow students are doing in this field.”
