South Campus wants student poets as participants and audience for its third annual Jazz Jam and Poetry Slam: The Perfect Blend of Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love April 16.
South Campus students are invited to sign-up to read their poetry and participate in the event.
The audience will enjoy free snacks and refreshments while listening to South Campus poets in three rounds of poetry and live jazz.
Sponsored by the communication arts and music departments, the event will be hosted by Catherine Higdon, instructor of English, and Rick Stitzel, instructor of music.
“Last year there were [more than] 200 people in attendance, and 20 poets performed,” Higdon said.
The slam will be 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the South Campus recital hall of the music building.

Students who sign up for the event will be judged on the following rules: Each poet must perform his/her own work; each poet gets three minutes to read a poem—if the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score; the poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments; of the scores received from the judges, the high and low scores are dropped and the three remaining scores will be added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.
The judges will be members of the South Campus English department: Evelyn Wilson, Nicole Vallee, Iris Johnson, Pauline Griffith and Cynthia Walters.
The event is intended for a mature audience. Parental discretion is advised.
