Health services extend hours, urge visits to offices

South Campus health services extended hours last spring to accommodate students.

Services are available 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays.

“Emergencies do happen, and people get sick around the clock,” said South registered nurse Anne Ingle.

Many students are not aware services are available to them through health services, said South health services coordinator Tina Ingram. Furthermore, students are also unaware of their hours of operation.

Several services are provided, including first aid, health education/counseling and referral information. Students can also have their blood pressure, glucose and weight monitored. For emergencies, nebulizers, oxygen and epinephrine pens are available.

“It’s pretty much like the nurse’s office in high school,” said South student Daphany Aguwa.

In addition to standard services, blood drives, bone marrow donor registries and HIV testing are provided on various dates throughout the semester.

Ingram emphasized the importance of students receiving the flu shot.

“We are in the middle of flu season. It peaks in January and February,” she said.

Students can get a flu shot at any time. Although students can no longer get the flu shot at health services, it is available at several places such as CareNow.

Ingram clarified that the flu shot, in fact, does not give someone the flu.

“If you have ever had the flu, you never want it again,” she said. “It’s like a truck hit you.”

Appointments are not necessary. Walk-ins are welcomed.
