Support available for military students

By Laurance Traylor/reporter

Services are provided to active military and veterans throughout TCC to help ease the transition into school.

These services are provided to help veterans get a full understanding of all benefits provided and to give assistance for properly processing the required paperwork. Also, this gives the service member a liaison between other colleges or universities and, occasionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Each campus has its own office, and each of those offices has multiple staff members who are specialists in VA educational issues and help keep the individual on track.

On occasion, the office offers seminars to help veterans understand the different benefits offered. This includes benefits such as the Montgomery G.I. Bill or the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, which allow for service members to start their education or continue their education for a limited time. Another type of benefit is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program, which allows training a veteran for a new career such as a firefighter or peace officer.

The benefits and assistance are not limited to just the service member as many spouses and children of service members are welcome to the military services provided on campus. They receive as much attention as the service members.

These offices also provide information about unknown benefits. One commonly unknown one is the Hazelwood Exemption, which exempts Texas veterans and certain family members from tuition for a certain number of hours if all qualifications are met.

For questions about services provided, one can visit www.tccd.edu/student_Services/Veterans_and_Military/Veteran_Military_Offices.html to locate the office on a particular campus or call the registrar at 817-515-4734 to get in contact with a VetSuccess campus counselor.
