Now-March 7 A Spanish-only Healthy Food Healthy Families series will be held 2-4 p.m. every Friday in SFOF 1731A on South Campus. Alba Serrano with Texas A&M Agrilife will guide students on how to eat foods that are healthier, understand food labels, control portion size and eat healthy on a budget. An English presentation will come later in the semester. Registration is required by calling the Family Empowerment Center at 817-515-4332.

Feb. 5 Students can learn to improve their oratory skills at a critical thinking and speech-making workshop 2-2:30 p.m. in the speech communication lab (TREF 6330A) on TR Campus. For more information, call the lab at 817-515-1158.

Feb. 5 Medicaid for Children and Families will be presented 3-5 p.m. in the Family Empowerment Center (SFOF 1738A) on South Campus. Guest facilitator Victoria Vaila, outreach counselor for Maximus-Texas Health Steps/STAR, will explain the free insurance program for qualified children and adults. Registration is required. Feb. 5 Geneticist Sam Rhine will be on NE Campus 6-7:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) discussing the newly discovered possibility to obtain human skin cells and convert them into stem cells. He will argue that with correct instructions, stem cells can be directed to form practically any type of cell in the human body. To learn more, contact student services at 817-515-6688.

Feb. 5 Students can join the bone marrow registry by getting a cheek swab 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the NTAB lobby on NE Campus. People who join must be between the ages of 18 and 44, be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet the health guidelines. Feb. 5 Health services will sponsor Smart Steps JPS Community Outreach 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the SSTU Forum Room on South Campus. A certified diabetes educator from JPS will educate those with diabetes or who care for someone with diabetes about prevention of the disease. Health services will provide drinks. Attendees can bring their own lunch.

Feb. 5 South Campus health services and Carter BloodCare will hold a blood and marrow donor drive 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the SSTU Patio and in the SSTU Foyer outside of SSTU 1102.

Feb. 5 NW health services will host a blood drive 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in WSTU 1303. Donors must weigh 110 pounds and be 16 years of age or older. Those under 18 need a signed permission slip to give blood. For more information, call NW health services at 817-515-7603.

Feb. 5-6 SE career services will host the Service Learning Agency Fair in the main commons 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 5 and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 6. Various agencies around Tarrant County such as the Arlington Public Library, Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington, Meals On Wheels and Trinity Habitat for Humanity will be present to talk to students interested in volunteering. Feb. 6 South Campus health services and the AIDS Outreach Center will provide free HIV testing 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in SACC 1331.

Feb. 6 Ted Lovato from The Samaritan House will discuss HIV/AIDS 1-4 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus. Registration is required. Feb. 6 NW student activities and health services will sponsor a fundraiser for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy 12:30-2 p.m. in WSTU 1303. The fundraiser will involve taking surveys and information about unplanned pregnancy. All NW clubs can participate. Student activities will donate $5 to each club account for every student each organization brings to the fundraising event, up to $100 or until available funds are exhausted. Students can represent only one club and will need to sign in and indicate which club they are representing. Lunch will be provided. Feb. 7 Applications for the NE Campus President’s Award to “Honor Excellence” will be available in department offices. Applicants must be current NE students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, be enrolled in at least nine credit hours on NE, have completed 12 semester hours at TCC and submit the application by 5 p.m. Feb. 26. Feb. 13-14 NE Campus Psi Beta will hold a fundraiser to raise awareness of domestic abuse. Psi Beta will sell Valentine’s cakes, lollipops and artificial roses for $1 each 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in front of the J. Ardis Bell Library and in the NBSS building. Each $1 purchase enters students into a drawing to win a Valentine’s basket with chocolates and a bear. Thirty percent of the proceeds will go to Battered Women in Transition.
