The works of artists Pamela Sunstrum and Kim Anno will be on display March 6-April 3 in the Joe B. Rushing Center for the Performing Arts on South Campus.
“They are artists who are highly respected, and I have long admired the work of each of them,” art assistant professor Joshua Goode said.
The Star + The Moon, a four-minute animation, came to life when Sunstrum became intrigued with futuristic sciences and ancient mythologies. The video follows a single traveler who disappears and reappears creating cosmological and astronomical phenomena. She mirrored collaged drawings to construct the panoramic landscape featured in the animation.
“Their work has interesting parallels on how they combine art and science,” Goode said.
Anno’s 24-minute cinema work, “Water City, Berkeley” will also be displayed. The video uses 100 teenagers to explore the ways in which people have adapted to the rise of sea level in coastal communities. Those who live close to the water have not only maintained their normal leisure activities but have also created some new ones, such as new water sports.
“I think this will broaden students’ views of what you can do as an artist,” Goode said. “There are so many possibilities that go beyond the preconceptions of just painting, drawing and sculpture.”
