San Marcos local Terri Hendrix has made her most personal album yet in The Spiritual Kind.
The folksy croon of Hendrix drifts through the tracks and tells stories of her musical inspirations.
“ Acre of Land” and “Spiritual Kind” sound simple but pleasing to the listener. They also have something most modern songs don’t: substance.
“ Spiritual Kind” is a musing of her confusion on religion, and “Acre of Land” is about her mentor, Marion Williamson.
My favorite track is “Jim Thorpe’s Blues.” This song has a more upbeat sound, even though it is about racism.
“ If I had a Daughter” is a touching poem of, well, if she had a daughter, but as a song, it seems a little dry. The track is really a glorified poetry reading.
The album is modestly mellow and sweet, and Hendrix makes the listeners feel welcomed in her songs.
Unfortunately, her singing doesn’t keep my attention throughout the CD. The listener might get bored and move on to other things.
The album would be great as a background soundtrack, but it’s not something I would listen to in my car.
Overall though, The Spiritual Kind is a good showcase of local music and the folk genre.
