For many Latin American countries, November is time to celebrate people who have died. SE Campus World Language lab will host the celebration of The Day of the Dead, El Dia de los Muertos, with an exhibit starting Thursday, Oct. 25, in ESEE 1120 and a guest speaker Nov. 1.
The exhibit will include a traditional altar that honors loved ones who have died by placing items that represent the person(s), Pedro Martinez, from the world language lab, said.
“ The altar will include pictures of famous people that have died and anything that they liked: music, food, drinks,” he said.
Traditional decorations include flowers, water, salt and skull ornaments to symbolize death, Martinez said.
Day of the Dead is very important in many Latin American countries including Mexico, Martinez said.
“ It gives you a sense of connection between the people that are no longer with us,” he said.
The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 1, will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the SE world language lab.
Also included in the activities is the Nov. 1 presentation by Mercedes Olivera, reporter from The Dallas Morning News, who will speak about the celebration in other countries.
Both the exhibit and presentation are open to all students.
