The digital revolution has reached NE Campus.
The photography department is seeking photographers for PHTC 1300, the new digital photography class.
The Teacher
The course, in addition to teaching new technology, also brought to TCC a new instructor—Alison Hahn, a UNT graduate.
As an undergraduate, Hahn took her first class in photography and found it enjoyable.
“ I like the ability to self express through photography,” she said.
Hahn has teaching experience at both two-year and four-year schools such as Richland College, Texas Woman’s University, UT-Arlington and UT-Dallas.
From her previous photography classes, Hahn has experience in color and black-and-white photography, film and digital imaging.
Outside of teaching, Hahn has worked professionally and had her works published.
“ I worked commercially for a national publication, and my images through them were published in national magazines,” she said.
Having worked in both digital and traditional film photography, Hahn is on the fence over the emergence of digital technology.
“ I don’t compare and contrast them because I actually teach and use both in my personal work,” she said.
“ So I think they work really nicely together, and a lot of my interests involve conversion.”
Although film will eventually become obsolete, Hahn still finds it useful.
“ It depends, I think, on what sector of photography you’re in,” she said. “If you’re in the commercial world, then by all means digital is the way to go. “If you’re in the academic world, then film is going to be around a little longer.”
Digital photography does come with a few advantages over film.
“ Immediate satisfaction, immediate gratification because you can see what you shot after you shot it,” she said. “And after the initial investment cost, it is less expensive to pursue.”
The Class
Photography 1300 is the first digital photography class offered by TCC, and Hahn will teach in the spring semester also. Two sections are offered Tuesday-Thursday 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.
Hahn said the few requirements for the class include having a D-SLR camera (digital single lens reflex). The necessary computer software is available in the digital photography lab.
