Seminar to teach how to beat stress

As a means to help students handle stress and avoid stress traps, the SE counseling center will present the Stress Management and Relaxation Training seminar in the North Ballroom next week.

SE counselor Joyce Fisher said college students face several stressors from their studies, jobs, finances and families.

“ It’s a challenge for them to balance all of their responsibilities and still find time to relax in their busy lives, ” she said.

“ Students feel like they never get to unwind from all the demands on their time.”

The stress traps some students can fall into include the inability to see problems as opportunities and trying to change things beyond their control.

To help students manage their stress, Fisher said, the seminar will include relaxation training.

“ Relaxation training enables students to calm themselves by teaching them to create quiet, still time in the midst of their busy lives, ” she said.

The relaxation training is based on deep breathing and muscle relaxation, similar to yoga and meditation, Fisher said.

The seminar will be 5:30-6:50 p.m. Feb. 10. Admission is free.
