NE Campus hosted and competed in the state forensics tournament that featured several speech events Feb. 6-8.

“Forensics allows students to explore their interests in debate, interpretation and public speaking events,” said Lisa Benedetti, NE communication arts chair. “We were nominated by the Texas Community College Speech and Theater Association to be this year’s hosts. Students from seven community colleges around the state competed.”

Although only three members of the 22 students in the program competed in the tournament, one TCC student came away a winner.

NE student Ashley Borck placed fourth in the speech-to-entertain category. The presentation could be informative or persuasive but required humor during the course of the speech.

“I did my speech on fandom,” she said, “I poked fun at Trekkies, Clay Aiken fans and Harry Potter fans.”

By placing fourth in the state tournament, Borck will be the lone TCC student to compete at nationals.
