Hispanic Heritage Calendar

Now-Oct. 1 NW student activities is sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Month essay and creative works contest. Students can enter artwork, photos and/or essays to win a cash prize. Entries must fall under one of two topics: “What does Hispanic culture mean to you?” or “What does Hispanic heritage mean to you?” Entries can be submitted to the student activities office and are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 1. Now-Oct. 15 A photo exhibit displaying the different types of cultures and traditions in the Hispanic community is in the Larry Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus.

Now-Oct. 15 Poster displays in the Walsh Library and the Student Center on NW Campus feature biographical information about NW Campus’ Hispanic faculty and administrators.

Sept. 18 A lecture discussing the evolution of the term “Tejano” will be presented by Texas State University history professor Frank de la Teja 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Larry Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). He will discuss how Hispanic Texans have struggled to find an identity that bridges their cultural roots in Mexico and the Hispanic world with the social and political realities of being Americans and how the meaning of “Tejano” has changed. Sept. 22 SE Campus student activities will host a Latino Movie Series. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in ESCT HUB, students can watch Foreigners in Our Land, a movie about Spanish exploration in the late 16th century. Sept. 23 SE student activities will host John Valdez, producer/director/co-writer of the film The Chicano Wave. Students can attend the showing for free 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the North Ballroom. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-3595.
