Now-Oct. 1 NW student activities is sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Month essay and creative works contest. Students can enter artwork, photos and/or essays to win a cash prize. Entries must fall under one of two topics: “What does Hispanic culture mean to you?” or “What does Hispanic heritage mean to you?” Entries can be submitted to the student activities office and are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 1. Now-Oct. 15 A photo exhibit displaying the different types of cultures and traditions in the Hispanic community is in the Larry Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus.
Now-Oct. 15 Poster displays in the Walsh Library and the Student Center on NW Campus feature biographical information about NW Campus’ Hispanic faculty and administrators.
Sept. 25 The SE library will sponsor guest speaker José Aguilar from Tarrant County Public Health. A recipient of the 2007 Spirit of Cesar Chavez Award, he also received recognition for his work as a community organizer of the Promotores de Salud Alliance of North Texas. Students can attend for free at 10:30 a.m. in SE library’s quiet study area. Refreshments will be provided.
Sept. 29 SE student activities will continue the Latino American Movie Series with Empire of Dreams 11-2 p.m. in ESCT HUB. The film depicts how the American population is reshaped by Latino immigration. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-3595.
Oct. 6 The Latino American Movie Series continues with War and Peace on SE Campus 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the ESCT HUB. The film shows how Latino Americans served their country by the hundreds of thousands in World War II in the face of discrimination back home. Oct. 7 SE student activities and the library will host guest speaker Monica Rankin at 5:45 p.m. in the library’s quiet study area. The associate professor of history at UT Dallas will speak about Latin American history in The Zoot Suit Riots of Los Angeles. Refreshments will be provided. Oct. 8 The SE library will host a film showing and discussion of Documented 8:30-9:50 a.m. in the silent study area of the library. Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas after he outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in The New York Times to document his life. Oct. 9 NW student activities will throw a fiesta in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Waterfall Courtyard (outside WTLO). The celebration will feature cultural music, food, dancing and a custom car show.
