NW students can remember their lost loved ones at the Spanish Club’s annual Day of the Dead celebration.
The event will be 9:30-10:45 a.m. Nov. 4 in the Michael Saenz Conference Center (WACB 1123).
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday usually celebrated Nov. 1 in Mexico, Central and South America to remember deceased loved ones.
Tombs and graves are decorated with food, flowers, pictures and candles.
“It does have a little bit of irony because even though they are dead, we still celebrate their lives,” Spanish assistant professor Alejandro Garza said. “You don’t necessarily have to be sad about it. You have to remember the happy moments.”
The event will feature food, an altar to remember loved ones and a Catrina costume contest.
Catrina is an elegant skull designed by an artist in the early 1900s, but now it is the icon of Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico.
Students can dress as Catrin, the male version or Catrina, the female version.
