A supplemental instruction job fair Dec. 6 on TR Campus will aim to fill 100 part-time staff positions across the district.
The hiring of two senior SI leaders and 18 SI leaders for each campus is part of rolling out the SI program districtwide.
“The beauty of SI is it teaches students those transferrable skills, basically what they need to do to be successful as a student,” student learning and success director Chris Darville said.
Senior SI leaders will have a starting pay rate of $14.57 per hour. Essential duties and responsibilities include assisting the campus SI coordinator, serving as a SI leader for 2000-level courses and working directly with SI leaders.
SE supplemental instruction coordinator Maria Delgado said senior SI leaders act as mentors to SI leaders.
“Besides the money, they’re getting experience because they are somehow going to be leading other SI leaders,” she said. “So their leadership skills are going to increase because they are responsible for a certain number of students.”
Darville said senior SI leaders support the SI coordinators with administrative duties.
“The SI leaders are trained regularly,” Darville said. “They’re assessed regularly to make sure that they are implementing the engagement practices and the hands-on practices that students need in these study sessions to be successful. They make sure those things are being implemented correctly during the study sessions.”
Interested SI senior leader applicants are required to have an associate degree or 60 college hours from a regionally accredited college or university, have earned a grade of “A” or higher in the target course, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have one year of supplemental instruction or related experience.
SI leaders will have a starting pay rate of $12 per hour. The position’s duties include completing and submitting SI study plans weekly, attending all class meetings of the target course, taking accurate notes and understanding all assignments, holding two to four one-hour SI sessions and maintaining one office hour per week.
NW supplemental instruction coordinator Ryan Ferguson said SI leaders are effective because they are peers with students.
“They attend the class again and listen to the lecture, and a few times a week they hold study sessions,” he said.
Applicants for SI leader positions are required to have 12 or more completed college credit hours, an 88 percent or higher grade earned in the target course, a cumulative GPA or 3.0 or higher and a faculty recommendation for content competency.
Applicants must complete the online application posted on jobs.tccd.edu by Dec. 4 to attend the job fair. Once the application is completed, an invitation will be sent by email.
