Russell Lee Brown received a $300 scholarship for finishing first place in TCC Connect’s “What Success Means to Me” essay competition as part of National Distance Learning Week. Jazmyn Johnson received a $200 scholarship for second, and Amy Moore received a $100 scholarship for third.

Now-Dec. 5 NW student development services is hosting a community service donation drive benefiting Cook Children’s Hospital. Donations accepted include coloring books, paintbrushes, watercolors, children’s DVDs, markers and baby rattles. Cardboard donation boxes can be found across campus.

Now-Dec. 5 Students can donate toys to the Veterans Association’s Toys for Tots drive in front of the bookstore on NW Campus.

Now-Dec. 11 TR’s Veterans Day Memorial Wall will be up for the remainder of the semester in the TR Rotunda. Students can support and honor veterans by leaving flowers, letters and other mementos. For more information, contact financial aid director Bill McMullen at william.mcmullen@tccd.edu.

Dec. 3 South Campus health services will sponsor the Carter BloodCare donor drive 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the SSTU Patio. Donors should be healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old with a photo ID. Walk-ins are welcome.

Dec. 3 The Communications Showcase will highlight work NW communications students have completed during the fall semester 12:30-2 p.m. in WSTU 1303-1305. Students will present projects. Instructors will present announcements from spring’s The Love Conference, and the winner of the NW Speech Contest will present the winning speech.

Dec. 3 Students can observe or participate in the Student Government Association forum to keep up to date with the latest concerns of their fellow students 2-3:30 p.m. in the Galley (NSTU 1506) on NE Campus.

Dec. 6, 8-9 TR students dealing with stress in preparing for finals can relax by playing with puppies. Therapy dogs will be available in the TR library 10 a.m.-noon and 4-6 p.m. all three days. For more information, contact library manager Stephanie Wineman at 817-515-1220.

Dec. 6 TR students can participate in a celebrity look-alike party and talent showcase at the Riverfront Café 7-11:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on TRTR Main Street or at the door when the event starts. Dec. 8-10 South Campus student development services will provide students with pencils, Scantrons and snacks as “survival kits” for finals week in the Student Center all day. For more information, contact senior office assistant Tristian Evans at 817-515-4154.

Jan. 12-Feb. 19 The Carrier Library on SE Campus will host the Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963 Smithsonian exhibit all day in ESED 1200. The traveling exhibit depicts the relationships between two leaders’ movements for equal rights. An opening reception is scheduled 4-6 p.m. Jan. 15 in ESED 1200. Jan. 22 SE’s library will host The Native American Civil Rights Movement presentation 1-2:20 p.m. in ESEE 1200 as part of its Changing America series. Adjunct history instructor Kallie Kosc will discuss the development of the Native American Civil Rights Movement.

Jan. 23 The Carrier Library on SE Campus will host history associate professor John Lundberg’s discussion on the 1956 desegregation of Mansfield Independent School District 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in ESED 1200. This is part of its Changing America series and is free and open to the public.

Jan. 27 A Carter BloodCare blood drive will be open to TR students in TR Action A 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Donors must be at least 17 years old with a valid photo ID and weigh over 110 pounds. For more information, contact health services coordinator Angela Virgin at 817-515-1059.

Jan. 23, 30 TR students can receive Mental Health First Aid certification by attending a two-part course in TR Action C noon–4 p.m. Students will learn how to identify and respond to signs of mental illness and addiction.
