NE Campus’ speech and debate held its own despite having fewer members.

It co-hosted The Cowtown Texas 2-Step Swing Tournament NE Campus with West Texas A&M Jan. 22-25 and placed eighth out of 13 teams with two students placing fifth in their individual events.

TCC competed against 13 schools including UT-Austin, Texas A&M, and the University of Oklahoma.

Becky Barber placed fifth in impromptu speaking, where students receive a quotation and have two minutes to prepare a five-minute speech, which is not easy, she said.

“There’s really not a lot you can do to prepare since it is on the spot,” she said.

Rosemary Kryksa also placed fifth in prose interpretation, where students act out published drama pieces in first-person. She said most of the pieces in the event are serious.

“My piece was just about how I had a weird break-up, and now I’m a better person because of it,” she said. “It’s a really comic piece, and when I first started doing it, I didn’t think I’d win with it.”
