Keep positive attitude, says speech instructor in seminar

Speech instructor Zach Frohlich discussed having the right attitude in life with NW students on April 28.

“Our attitudes affect every aspect of our lives,” he said. “The definition of attitude is your mental position regarding a fact or state. I’m gonna help you keep a positive attitude.”

Students should make positive thinking a habit, Frohlich said. The very first thought in the morning will set the tone for the day, so make it a positive one.

Frohlich gave his method for a better attitude.

“Good and bad things happen to everybody, but not everyone embraces that. Those experiences have helped you become the person you are today,” he said. “You should set goals for yourself. While it isn’t entirely true that you can be anything you want to be, accept your limitations so you can figure out what you are good at and passionate about.”

Healthy habits are one way to stay positive. Students should follow healthy physical habits as well as emotional ones, Frohlich said.

“Be aware of the limited amount of time we have and be grateful,” he said.

Frohlich said he also fixes bad attitudes. He listed some symptoms of a bad attitude.

“Worrying about things we can’t control can lead to a poor attitude. It leads to stress, and you just waste energy on things you have no control over,” he said. “Overreacting and giving up too soon on goals can lead to having a poor outlook on life, and nobody wants that.”

Frohlich listed some anecdotes about his life that have greatly improved his outlook.

“If he could have an attitude as positive as that,” NW student Angela Landrum said, “then I could certainly stand to be less negative.”
