NE speaker stresses resume’s importance

NE seminar attendees March 31 heard how to get an edge over the job competition.

Vicki McCleery, NE career and employment services administrative assistant, divided her presentation into how and how not to build a proper resume and cover letter.

“Resumes are like bait,” she said. “If you’ve gone fishing and you’re not catching any fish, you change your bait. Resumes are all about getting the attention of the employer.”

Cover letters should cater to what bosses need, she said.

McCleery recommended students check out a Districtwide Job Fair 2-6 p.m. April 16 in the SSTU Dining Hall on South Campus.

Attendees TR Radiology adjunct instructor Manny Santos and Gloria Santos of the Back to Work 50 Plus program on NE said they found the session helpful.

“My cover letters were very simple, and I have found out that they need to be more organized,” Manny Santos said. “I definitely plan on utilizing that.”

Gloria Santos plans to share the information.

“I learned a lot that can help our students who are 50-plus build a resume,” she said.
