Flower trend sprouts

Formerly for women, fashion grows for men

Once upon a time, spring’s prettiest floral prints were reserved for girls only or the boys sporting a Hawaiian print shirt on a tropical vacation.

Now, men are branching out and picking up the prettiest flowers in the garden.

One of the newest trends in fashion is floral-designed wear specifically for men. Student Jace Armstrong purchased his first bouquet of floral-adorned shoes last year.

“They are a limited edition Vans,” Armstrong said. “People seemed shocked to see my shoes, but no one said anything out of line.”

Other than the occasional Hawaiian print shirt, Armstrong had never worn flowers.

“I wanted to start with shoes first and branch out before going full-fledged floral,” Armstrong said.

Granted, some designers have been flirting with sprinkling tiny seeds for a few seasons.

Nike included the Kevin Durant KD VII EXT rose-print floral sneakers in its spring 2014 collection, symbolizing how Durant rose through tough challenges and became MVP while websites ASOS and Plndr showed floral-print shirts and blazers for men of all ages.

Now the bouquet look has landed on campus as well with baseball caps, socks and shorts.

Student Anthony Santiago has embraced floral-print clothing for a while because he likes it.

“To me, floral prints were never that big of a deal, but it seems others weren’t ready to embrace it,” Santiago said. “However, lately, I’ve seen others wearing it, and it looks overplayed, but I guess others should wear what they want.”
