NW Campus’ dance classes and companies will perform two concerts May 7 in Theatre Northwest (WTLO Building).
The first concert, Assorted Pieces, will feature the Northwest Dance Company, Mosaic Dance Project and some of the spring semester technique classes. The informal concert will feature a variety of dances from ballet to modern to hip-hop and more, highlighting the different dance classes offered on NW. The performance will be 1-2 p.m.
The second concert 7:30-8:30 p.m. will feature the work of the spring composition and choreography class.
“These are students who are learning to choreograph for the first time,” said dance associate professor Lacreacia Sanders. “They learn the steps here and then hold their own rehearsals with their dancers on their own time.”
For student choreographers, this is a way to not only showcase what they have learned but to show the many sides of dance.
“I want the audience to see there is diversity in dance,” student choreographer Adrian Ortega said. “There’s so many more styles than just ballet or modern. I want them to see beyond the classical styles.”
For student choreographer Alexander Geck, the class has taught him how to enhance movements in a dance.
“Simple movement can be taken a lot further,” he said. “How you simply extend your arm and where it goes can really change how a dance is interpreted.”
Fellow choreographer Amanda McClure agreed.
“Simplicity can go a long way,” she said.
One of the dances featured in the concert, “SHE,” was choreographed by student Chelsey Johnson.
“It’s a very powerful piece,” she said. “Lots of fast, powerful movement. It’s exciting, though, very exciting.”
Another piece to be featured, “The Fallen” by student Michaela Cardinal, has more of a creepy side.
“There is a wide range of dances featured in both concerts,” Sanders said. “There’s classical to contemporary to modern. There’s even some break dancing in them.”
Both concerts are designed to promote the success of the dance classes and showcase the wide variety of dance styles offered.
