After TCC’s board of trustees approved a new learning commons on SE Campus, the campus is looking forward to its next steps.
The learning commons will serve as a bridge between SE’s two buildings with a covered space below the bridge. Students can rest, study or hang out there between classes.
The board voted Feb. 18 to move forward with the design of the learning commons, and the next step will be selecting a firm to construct it. SE president Bill Coppola says a timeline for construction has not yet been established, but he looks forward to getting it built.
“It will provide an additional area for students to have a space for collaborative learning,” he said. “In addition, we should see some relief to the overcrowding in our hallways. The learning commons will also include a variety of technology options for students to use.”
SE student Irving Sandoval is interested to see how the space will turn out.
“I hope it’s going to be good and useful,” he said. “Maybe we can create more stuff like that.”
SE student Vanessa Rodriguez hopes the space will help students interact more with each other.
“Hopefully, we can help each other out with things like turning in assignments,” she said.
On the other hand, SE student Jason Branch could live with or without the space.
“I guess that’s cool. Anything that makes it easier to get up here during the day,” he said. “I really don’t care as long as it doesn’t cost me anything.”
